Resistance Spot Welding

Spot welding can be one of the most demanding robotic applications. Welding efficiently requires quick spot to spot movement and high payload capacity to accomodate a typical spot welding gun.  Possessing these traits allows Nachi Robots to excel in spot welding applications, especially when the required production rate is high.  Nachi Robotic Systems Inc. is the leading supplier of spot welding robots in Japan and North America.

Nachi's ST Fast Series (ST133F, ST166F, and ST210F) and ST Slim Series (ST70L and ST100) have an improved cable management system (CMS) that eliminates cable wear problems while expanding the usable range-of-motion. Power and communication cables as well as water and air hoses are completely contained within the CMS.  Neat packaging of all utilities eliminates the risk of them getting caught on peripheral equipment.  This advantage allows very accurate offline programming as the robot dress geometry is standard.

The ST "Slim" Series robots (ST70L and ST100) were designed with an advanced space-saving concept making them ideal for  compact systems or high-density, multi-layered installations.

Servo Gun technology is an important advance in spot welding. Nachi has led the industry in Servo Gun technology development and has improved weld quality and speed. Servo driven spot welding guns offer major advancements in spot welding technology.  Servo driven spot welding guns have several distinct advantages over older pneumatic technology.  Servo guns deliver very consistent tip force and do not slam electrodes onto the work piece as pneumatic guns do; this increases electrode life and weld quality.  The servo gun tip opening can be programmed at any distance; this decreases cycle time because the gun does not need to perform a full stroke between each weld.  Equalization is performed by the robot, eliminating the need for self equalizing guns and thus reducing cost.  The price of servo guns is still decreasing, as a result servo guns are more popular than ever.

Interfacing to the welding equipment is an important part of setting up any spot welding application. Nachi offers many interface solutions ranging from the fully integrated IWB (Integrated Welding Board) with Medar and Dengensha weld timers.  Using IWB all relevant welding parameters can be programmed directly through the robot teach pendant. Fieldbus-type interfaces (DeviceNet, Profibus, Interbus, ControlNet) and standard but flexible descrete control are also available.
